March 27 is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Arkansas. The U of A’s sesquicentennial celebration will include activities on the Hill and beyond, including virtual celebrations that will connect alumni and friends around the globe.
Social Hogs, the U of A’s social media ambassador program, will be a key part of the celebration. By sharing inspiring posts, info and celebratory messages on social media, everyone can help spread the word of this monumental milestone throughout the year.
The online celebration will kick off in March with a virtual celebration planned for March 27, the official 150th anniversary of the U of A. It was on that day that the state’s first land-grant institution and state’s flagship university was born.
The day will be marked with various online celebrations. Our most engaged ambassadors will receive celebration boxes and have special posts that they can share with their audiences.
Help us highlight what makes the U of A special – all of the people who have taught, learned, lived and worked here over the years – by joining in the virtual celebration and sharing what the U of A means to you.
You can become a social media ambassador and join the activities that day and beyond by becoming a Social Hog.
Social Hogs uses the platform Social Toaster to share posts. Once you sign up, you will receive periodic emails with social media posts and pictures that you can share if you chose with just a click. Join the celebration and help us stay connected around the globe as we celebrate in person and virtually over the next 18 months.
The University of Arkansas begins an 18-month celebration of its sesquicentennial with the launch of its 150th anniversary website. Here, visitors can find stories and videos about the various 150th celebrations set to take place over the next year as well as photos and information about the university’s past, present and future.
One element special to the site is the Portraits of Progress. The Portraits of Progress will feature vignettes on important figures who have helped make the U of A more diverse, equitable and inclusive. New stories will be added throughout the sesquicentennial year.
Visitors to the website will also be able to utilize the new virtual Senior Walk feature, highlighting one of the oldest traditions on campus. The interactive Senior Walk feature includes a searchable database of the graduate names etched into the historic walk. It also has 360-degree imagery to show the approximate location of each graduating class and help with wayfinding. The university is the state’s first land-grant institution and oldest institution, established as Arkansas Industrial University in 1871.
Due to COVID-19, the sesquicentennial schedule has been adjusted to allow for more in-person activities to be held later in 2021 as well as into the spring of 2022, when the university will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its first day of classes.
