If you were in Fayetteville the first week of June, it was hard to miss the high traffic, blue shirts, and trucks of food coming and going. For an event as big as Walmart Shareholders, there is bound to be more than enough food to go around. Razorback Food Recovery was able to collect this leftover food and give it back to the community.
Razorback Food Recovery (RFR) is a program of the Center For Community Engagement that has worked to recover surplus food items and redistribute it to those in need within the Fayetteville Community and Northwest Arkansas region since February of 2014.
During this year’s Walmart Shareholders meeting on campus 9,400 pounds of food were delivered by RFR volunteers to the Salvation Army, Seven Hills Homeless Shelter, and the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry. The week-long event provided enough food to stuff the pantries of the NWA community.
Volunteers met on the third floor of the Stadium Drive parking garage outside the Arkansas Union to collect the food, place it safely in trucks and drove to the doors of places in need to unload 948 pans of warm food.
The Razorback Food Recovery team spoke of how grateful they are for the partnership with Chartwell catering service. Without their great communication and correspondence, it wouldn’t have been as easy and as fun, as it was. This partnership has been making a difference in lives of those in need since 2014.
