How long have you been at the University of Arkansas in Student Affairs? What have you enjoyed most about your time here?

I started working at the University of Arkansas in the Multicultural Center as a part of the College Access Initiative in 2017. I have enjoyed many things working at this university like the many students and staff who I now call friends and even many members of the surrounding community.  Of all things I must highlight the fact that I was able to serve under the leadership of Dr. Charles Robinson, the University of Arkansas’ first black chancellor. Growing up in a small rural Arkansas town, attending the U of A, let alone being employed, seemed unreachable. Seeing a black man be in leadership at this institution has been inspirational and has given me a true vision of what the United States can become.

Tell us a little about your role in Student Affairs. What brings you joy in this role?

As a College Access Initiative Outreach Specialist, I helped students all over the state of Arkansas prepare for college. In my current role as the Assistant Director of the Multicultural Center, I oversee programming held by the center and focus a lot of my time on the Black Student Experience. I feel undeniable joy when I see students enjoying the many programs that the MC host. I truly think that a meaningful college experience entails diverse experiences for students, and I love that we can help brings those to them.

What is the greatest misconception people have about Student Affairs and how do you break that?

One misconception that people have about Student Affairs is that the work that we do is not important to the overall academic success of students. We break that by using data and showing how the programs and initiatives that we host are helping students with having that sense of belonging, providing them with the necessary tools to succeed, and helping them to find a community on campus. These are all contributors to overall retention and graduation.

What do you like to do with your time outside of the University?

When I am not working here at the university, I have a part time job at Piney Ridge Treatment Facility. I also have my own business, ArtxAnReckez, making balloon art for events in various locations. Traveling and kicking it with friends are also a few things that I enjoy.

What do you hope students and colleagues will remember about your interactions?

One thing that I hope students and colleagues remember about my interactions is that I always showed as my true self. So many times, in professional settings we tend to think that we must act a certain, dress a certain way, and speak a certain way but if we put people in a box, we will never know what an individual truly has to offer.
