How long have you been at the University of Arkansas in Student Affairs?
I started at the University of Arkansas in July 2022. So, just under three years.
What have you enjoyed most about your time here?
I enjoy the opportunities I have had to help students grow in their leadership roles. Whether it’s helping an RSO learn the about the re-registration process or hosting new RSO orientation I get to support their needs.
Tell us a little about your role in Student Affairs. What brings you joy in this role?
I serve as the Assistant Director for Registered Student Organizations. It’s an amazing opportunity to enter the inner workings of exactly how students become leaders. In my role I oversee policy and procedure changes, the RSO re-registration process, and co-advise Student Organization Outreach Involvement Experience. This role brings me joy because of the daily nuanced situations that appear. I also highly enjoy the large-scale programming we occasionally get to put together.
What is the greatest misconception people have about Student Affairs and how do you break that?
This question is twofold. First, I think that folks may not understand how difficult it is to work in Student Affairs. We are tasked with giving students the best college experience and creating the structure for their leadership skills. Secondly, I think the public and those folks outside of student affairs don’t realize the work that goes into creating the U of A experience for tens of thousands of students.
I break these misconceptions by always supporting the learning and growth of my colleagues on campus. I also use learning opportunities as a chance to expand the knowledge base about the offerings that RSO has like Hillfest (Aug 18, 2025), the RSO Workspace, and the monthly involvement fairs that SOOIE host.
What do you like to do with your time outside of the University?
Fishing and farming. If you’re an angler, then you know the excitement of the spring weather. I’m always excited to fish. My largest catch is a 5 lb largemouth bass. I also have a passion for all things organic agriculture. I am looking forward to direct seeding some amazing crops this Summer.
What do you hope students and colleagues will remember about your interactions?
I hope that students feel empowered and emboldened by our interactions. Say the thing that everyone else is thinking, don’t go with the flow just because, “it’s always been done this way”, go fish in the middle of the day. As for my colleagues, I hope that they have felt challenged and supported. I’m a big fan of innovation. I’m grateful to those folks who have dared to accept the challenge of intentionally building up the world’s future leaders.
