How long have you been at the University of Arkansas in Student Affairs? What have you enjoyed most about your time here?

I started working at the Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center June 3, 2024. What I enjoy most is having leadership that is positive, supportive, considerate and who effectively trains without being judgmental. My co-workers from day one made me feel welcomed and are always ready to share and help as I learn the role of a School Certifying Official. I also enjoy learning the history of the University and exploring historical sites on campus.

Tell us a little about your role in Student Affairs. What brings you joy in this role.

As a School Certifying Official (SCO) I certify the enrollment of eligible veterans, reservists, service members, and their dependents and report student enrollment information – term dates, credit loads, qualifying costs – to the VA for benefit payments disbursement.

I enjoy helping students and families navigate the benefit certification process to achieve their educational goals.

What is the greatest misconception people have about Student Affairs and how do you break that?

One of the misconceptions people have about Student Affairs is that it is not effective. I encourage students to take advantage of student services because they can be highly effective in helping them achieve their academic and personal goals. Whether the student needs help with time management, study skills, or mental health support, student services can provide the resources and support they need to succeed.

What do you like to do with your time outside of the University?

Outside of the University, I love spending time with my grandkids, playing tennis, watching classic movies and hand knitting.

What do you hope students and colleagues will remember about your interactions?

I hope that the students would have felt valued and respected. I hope my colleagues saw that I was helpful and competent and provided the best possible service to students and their families during their time at the University.

Is there anything else you would like to add or let our readers know?

Make your story bigger than just yourself. Find ways to contribute something positive to other as often as possible. Give and give and give.
