Tell us something about your academic passions and how those relate to your role in Student Affairs program or department?
I am passionate about working with students and people in general- understanding their unique life perspectives to better guide my own life. I was originally interested in counseling but after a great conversation with my academic advisor I shifted to Student Affairs. I enjoy working with the college student population because for many it is the first time they are experiencing independence from their families and have the freedom to explore or reinvent themselves.
What has been your greatest experience outside of the classroom?
My greatest experience in grad school has been working for New Student and Family programs during the last two summers with R.O.C.K. Camp and A-Week. Never would I have expected to camp overnight in the woods, go rock climbing, or help plan events for the largest first-year class as a part of my job. I have learned to be incredibly flexible and adapt to unique challenges, which has increased my confidence. Some of the days on campus were incredibly exhausting (and sweaty) but it left me with some great memories.
What advice would you give new students about getting involved on campus?
Do not be afraid to ask for help! Chances are someone else has been in your shoes with the exact same problem. There are so many professionals on this campus with years of experience and connections to resources.
What do you like to do with your time outside of the university?
I spend a lot of my free time painting and have recently finished a lot of pet, landscape, and childhood photo painting commissions. I was an art major in undergrad, so I love to continuously build upon the techniques I learned. Most of the paintings are acrylic paint on canvas, but I love to work with watercolor when I have the patience. Outside of painting I like driving on road trips, attempting yoga, and Face-Timing my 2-year-old niece.
When do you plan to graduate and what is coming next for you?
I graduate this May! I plan to continue working in Higher Education by returning to my undergraduate university (Kansas State) in Manhattan, Kansas. I will also continue to attend professional conferences and travel to new cities when I can.
Is there anything else you would like to add or let our readers know?
