Tell us something about your academic passions and how those relate to your role in Student Affairs program or department?

I’ve always been passionate about helping people, specifically social issues that shouldn’t be problems, such as medicine prices and food insecurity. It wasn’t until I switched into Walton my sophomore year that I began to really pursue that interest, and I soon after joined the VAC board as the Food Drives Coordinator where I’ve been able to work directly with some of the issues I’m passionate about. Being a Supply Chain major and Nonprofit Studies minor gives me a unique perspective when problem-solving and finding sustainable solutions to helping those in need of assistance.

What has been your greatest experience outside of the classroom?

Hands down, being a member of the VAC board has been my greatest experience. It is the best group of people to be around, and my specific involvement with my spice drive and our partnership with Tri Cycle Farms have been so rewarding. The pantry team has pushed me to pursue my passions involving food insecurity and food waste, and I’m 100% where I am now because of them.

What advice would you give new students about getting involved on campus?

Actually read the emails you get about volunteering, UP events, SOOIE, all of it! I didn’t get involved at all my first semester and did not really know how, but all it took was one of Angela Oxford’s weekly emails to point me to volunteering at the pantry. From there, I made friendships and connections that got me involved in other areas.

What do you like to do with your time outside of the university?

Even though I’m from central AR, I love to live like an NWA local! I love going to local coffee shops with friends or to study, walking all the trails, going to all the flea markets and thrift stores, the farmers market, everything NWA! If it’s on Leisurlist, it’s on my list to check out.

When do you plan to graduate and what is coming next for you?

I plan on graduating May 2022, and post-graduation is a bit up in the air for me right now. I’m potentially looking at grad school to get a Masters in Public Administration or Nonprofit Management, becoming an AmeriCorps VISTA, or maybe finding a job with a local nonprofit. I really just want to continue serving communities and helping alleviate those critical social issues.

Is there anything else you would like to add or let our readers know?

Don’t be afraid to get involved or try an RSO that you wouldn’t have before! I began volunteering at the Full Circle Food Pantry my freshman year without knowing anyone, and now, I will serve as the Chair for Full Circle during my senior year. Getting involved with something during your time at the U of A can make the entire difference!
