Tell us something about your academic passions and how those relate to your role in Student Affairs program or department?
During undergrad I struggled a lot with my career direction and vacillated between so many majors. At the same time, I began peer mentoring in the Career Development Center and found huge enjoyment in connecting with students at the one-on-one level. I loved providing helpful resources that empowered students to make decisions that aligned with their personal values and convictions. From these experiences, I realized that I could combine my skills to continue guiding students in their own collegiate journeys. That brought me to higher education as a full-time profession and the Walton advising office, which is where I currently serve as a graduate assistant.
What has been your greatest experience outside of the classroom?
Building lasting relationships with my professors and colleagues! Many of these individuals have served as mentors and broadened my outlook during critical times of my collegiate career. Since they came from varying cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs, these individuals deepened my capacity for empathy and understanding – something that I could never have developed on my own.
What advice would you give new students about getting involved on campus?
It can be overwhelming to know where to start! Our campus offers so much. With that in mind, I think it is key to find an activity that reflects an aspect of what you care about, hold interest in, and/or find fulfillment with (academically, personally, or professionally). This makes the experience far more genuine and meaningful.
And it’s okay to move on! Trying new and obscure things is encouraged since that can lead to previously undiscovered passions. But sometimes we try things and don’t enjoy anything about them, and that’s just as impactful! It can take a while to find what resonates with us.
What do you like to do with your time outside of the university?
Outside of campus, I enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. And, of course, I love being a doting mother to my small dog child (her name is Charlotte Ann!).
When do you plan to graduate and what is coming next for you?
Currently I plan to graduate in May 2023! Afterwards I hope to work as an academic advisor, then move towards a doctorate and further administrative roles.

For those in Student Affairs, thank you for all your work in higher education, whether you are an employee, alumni, or other member! Students are often made during the small, everyday moments that shift the trajectories of their lives. Higher education is not without its challenges, but current Student Affairs professionals, and those involved, are huge factors in shaping who those students become – and we are incredibly grateful to all of you.
