Tell us something about your academic passions and how those relate to your role in Student Affairs program or department?

As a first-generation student, I began my college career with the expectation that I would be constantly academically challenged. As a senior, I can say with confidence that I have been inspired by my professors to never stop my pursuit to continue challenging my knowledge. My passions include Latino(a) politics, developmental psychology, and law. I want to continue my education to obtain a J.D. and Ph. D. to pursue a career in civil rights. Through my involvement in Student Affairs, I have had the opportunity to learn to lead and advocate for my campus. The real-life experiences I’ve had will set me up for success in my future endeavors.

What has been your greatest experience outside of the classroom?

I have had some of the greatest experiences and memories through my time with University Programs (UP), Associated Student Government (ASG), Programs Allocations Board (PAB), and various student committees. One of the most unique experiences I’ve had was the opportunity to plan, organize, and execute a community-wide drag show on our campus. This was my sophomore year as UP’s Cultures and Concepts Chair. To see students from all parts of campus come together, take a break from class, and have fun was incredible. It challenged me, made me a better leader, and who doesn’t love a good drag show?

What advice would you give new students about getting involved on campus?

My best piece of advice is to do things that make you a little uncomfortable. Show up to that informational meeting, go to that event, apply for that leadership position. One of my mentor’s once told me, “ it’s better to fail trying than to have never tried at all”. Sometimes some of the best surprises come from just taking a chance and doing things you’re a little nervous about.

What do you like to do with your time outside of the university?

I like to spend my time outside campus reading, being outside, and hanging out with my friends and family. I enjoy going hiking, canoeing, running and I’m so lucky to live in an area perfect for that. In a pre-covid world I loved going to concerts; some of my favorite concerts include Maroon 5, Gavin Degraw, and Jason Mraz.

When do you plan to graduate and what is coming next for you?

I plan to graduate in May of 2022! I plan on taking a year off from school to move to Washington D.C. and work in public policy or the legal sector. I will then apply to a joint J.D. and Ph. D. program to earn my law degree and doctorate in Latino(a) politics. From there, wherever the wind takes me! My dream job is to work as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Is there anything else you would like to add or let our readers know?

Remember to always take care of yourself first. You can’t be the leader and student you want if you’re not well and healthy. This includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
