Q: Tell us something about your academic passions and how those relate to your role in Student Affairs program or department?
In my role at the Career Development Center, I have been able to learn a lot about public relations. This has been really helpful for my academic passions because it has taught me to be creative in the way that I communicate with others. This is important with the Career Center as well as important within the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders because a lot of people take in information best in different ways. Having the ability to use multiple modalities promotes inclusivity and helps more people. I have also been able to learn a lot about resumes, cover letters, and interviews. This has been great because I get to help other people as well as learn for myself for my own future graduate school resumes and interviews.
Q: What has been your greatest experience outside of the classroom?
My greatest experience outside of the classroom has been participating in the Health Teams Abroad: Sweden faculty-led study abroad program. Through this program, I was able to collaborate with other interdisciplinary health professions students to evaluate how health policy, values, and practices differ between the US and Sweden. I also had the ability to connect with professors and gain a better idea of what topics I am interested in within my major. It was the experience of a lifetime to be able to visit health facilities in another country and hear about health care from a different perspective. It really enables me to look at things now through a different lens and try to bring new methods of doing things into what I do.
Q: What advice would you give new students about getting involved on campus?
One piece of advice I would give to new students is to explore every option. There are tons of RSO’s and programs/departments to get involved with. Don’t be afraid to explore them and find the things you are passionate about, and don’t be afraid to do it even if none of your friends want to. As a freshman, I was on the shy side and didn’t want to try new things alone. Once I did begin to get involved, my circle of friends and support grew even more.
Q: What do you like to do with your time outside of the university?
Outside my time of the university, I love to go for runs. There are so many great spots for running and hiking in Northwest Arkansas!
Q: When do you plan to graduate and what is coming next for you?
I will be graduating in the Spring of 2021. After graduation, I’ll be getting a master’s degree for speech language pathology. I would love to one day work in the medical setting with individuals with hearing loss and cochlear implants.
