Staff Q & A

Hometown: I am a California Girl! Born in Palo Alto, California.

Title: Student Media Business Manager

Years of Service: Started as a Receptionist at what was then called Student Publications when my youngest son started pre-school. I needed something that would work with my hours of being a MOM! Spent 7 years in that job and then ultimately was appointed 23 years ago in my current position! So, as you can tell I love the job! It’s because I seem to always be surrounded by great students and staff! Heck, I love making them feel comfortable at Student Media!

How long have you been at the University of Arkansas in Student Affairs?

What have you enjoyed most about your time here? I have been associated with Student Affairs for at least 23 years now! I believe the enjoyment I find at Student Affairs is because of the ability to get to know the students and help at times guide them on their journey. I have also been very fortunate to know and work with such wonderful staff that make all the difference, they are always ready to help to make this department the best it can be! Truly Special people!

Tell us a little about your role in Student Affairs. What brings you joy in this role?

I work as the Business Manager at Student Media doing the daily management of our student run Organizations from payroll to travel, etc… We are The Traveler, The Razorback Yearbook, Main Hill Ad Agency, Hill Magazine, UATV, and KXUA radio station. The joy is simple, I get to work with students! They are all types and come from all over. It brings me joy to be a small part of their lives while they are here but most of all I hope I have made some small impact in their lives that they will remember.

What is the greatest misconception people have about Student Affairs and how do you break that?

I would say that the misconception might be that it’s not all about the fun activities, or if students have a problem. Most don’t even know who we are. Students need the tools to engage in what they really need for success. We need to be better at communicating that we are here to support them good or bad, help them to engage so they can be successful in college and their future. Getting involved and making the kind of connections the students need makes a huge difference. I think we must always make it a teachable moment every chance we get. Student Affairs can make a great impact on the student’s college experience and after, just need to make sure they know about us!

What do you like to do with your time outside of the University?

I have to say I will always try to find time to get in my yard! I love to be in my garden and be creative, it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I plant something new or just haul mulch! Kinda like to get my hands dirty. I also like to walk and just listen to music. I also enjoy a good music venue as well because I like to dance! Yes, I am the one that will be dancing when the music starts 🙂 Most of all it’s great to have grandchildren to enjoy 🙂

What do you hope students and colleagues will remember about your interactions?

I would hope that they felt valued and respected, also remembering my willingness to always help! Mostly hope they remember that I was enjoyable to work with. Maybe that I made them laugh too!

Is there anything else you would like to add or let our readers know?

I am a friendly caring person and like to listen to music while working. Music makes me happy 🙂 I have always been drawn to help others no matter what the environment. Every morning I say to myself as I get my coffee, Lets go make it a good day!
